Thesis resume

What can the chromium-metal/chromium-oxide marker tell us about the formation of the precipitation circle observed in nuclear fuel? The "precipitation circle" is observed on radial sections of irradiated PWR fuel pellets after chemical etching and appears as a circle delimiting a dark disc in the center of the pellet. When observed at high magnification, it appears to be the abrupt separation between a zone containing micron-sized fission gas bubbles in the centre of the pellet and a zone containing very few of this bubbles outside the central disc. Understanding this distribution of gas bubbles within the PWR pellet is a major challenge for modelling the release of fission gases from the fuel rod - a major research focus at CEA. Until now, the precipitation circle is described by an empirical model which associates it with an isotherm in the fuel pellet. The objective of this work is to study a physical mechanism that could explain the formation of the precipitation circle and, eventually, be introduced in the modelling of the fuel behaviour in operation. The proposed physical mechanism consists in the precipitation of fission gas bubbles by heterogeneous germination on metallic precipitates, the distribution of the metallic precipitates being governed by the oxygen potential gradient in the pellet. We conducted a two-stage experimental study to test the relevance of this hypothesis. In the first step, samples of virgin UO2 fuel containing chromium precipitates in oxide form were subjected to a temperature gradient, between 1600 and 600°C, in the DURANCE facility at CEA-Cadarache to mimic the conditions seen by the fuel under irradiation. The characterizations carried out, after heat treatment, by SEM, SIMS, EPMA and RAMAN spectrometry, show the formation of a "metallization circle", i.e. the transformation of chromium precipitates from the oxide form to the metallic form in the central part of the sample. This result supports the hypothesis that the thermochemistry of the fuel is at the origin of the abrupt boundary related to the precipitation circle. Two different thermochemical states would exist on both side of an isotherm, which in the case of the fuel pellet is a circle. In a second step, we investigated whether the metal precipitates created by the thermal gradient could be sites for heterogeneous gas bubble nucleation. To do this, we implanted the same samples as those used in the first stage on the CEA-Saclay JANNUS platform with helium, krypton and xenon. They were then subjected to a temperature gradient in the CHAUCOLASE facility at the Fresnel Institute in Marseille. The characterisations carried out, after heat treatment, by SEM, RAMAN spectrometry and SEM-FIB, confirm the formation of a metallisation circle. However, no gas bubbles were observed. Several hypotheses are proposed and discussed to explain why no gas bubbles have been seen. This work has demonstrated that metallization circles can be generated in a virgin fuel with experimental conditions close to those of nuclear fuel in operation. The relationship between precipitation rings and metallisation circle remains to be demonstrated and further research is proposed in this objective.
